What Is Orderflow Trading?
Orderflow trading is the practice of analyzing real-time buy and sell pressure at specific price levels to predict where price is likely to move next. Instead of relying on historical price bars or volume profiles alone, orderflow traders look at the live distribution of bids and asks — essentially, they watch what institutional and retail traders are actually willing to buy or sell at each price level, right now.
In traditional chart analysis, traders might see that price closed above a moving average and assume the trend is up. But orderflow traders dig deeper: they ask "Is this close supported by sustained buying pressure, or is it a trap where buyers are exhausted and sellers are ready to dominate?"
This is where footprint charts come in. A footprint chart shows you the bid/ask distribution at every price level for every bar — revealing the mechanical structure of institutional order flow before price moves.

Key Insight
Orderflow traders don't predict price movement based on sentiment or technical indicators. They read the actual bids and asks in the market order book — the real buying and selling pressure happening at this exact second.
Understanding Bid/Ask Data
Every trade in the market happens at the intersection of two forces: a buyer and a seller. The bid is what buyers are willing to pay, and the ask is what sellers want in return.
In ES (E-mini S&P 500) futures, which trade on the CME, you'll see thousands of buy orders (bids) and sell orders (asks) stacked at different price levels. Most traders only see the top-of-book — the best bid and ask — but orderflow traders see the entire order book structure.
The bars above show bid and ask volume at different price levels. When there's significantly more bid volume than ask volume at a price level, it signals institutional buying pressure. Conversely, heavy ask volume means sellers are aggressive.

What the Data Reveals
Bid Size > Ask Size: More buyers than sellers → potential upward pressure. Ask Size > Bid Size: More sellers than buyers → potential downward pressure. Balanced: Undecided market.
Why Most Retail Traders Don't Use Orderflow (Yet)
If orderflow analysis is so powerful, why aren't all retail traders doing it? Several reasons:
1. Real-Time Data Costs Money
Professional traders pay thousands per month for order book data feeds. Retail traders either can't afford it or aren't aware it exists. Sierra Chart users, however, can access their broker's footprint data at no extra cost — they just need the right tools to interpret it.
2. It's Visually Complex
A footprint chart with 20+ price levels per bar, color-coded bid/ask columns, and delta numbers is overwhelming at first glance. Most retail traders stick to simpler candlestick charts because they're easier to scan quickly.
3. Interpretation Requires Training
Reading footprints is a skill. You need to understand concepts like absorption, exhaustion, momentum divergence, and imbalance reversal. Without training, most traders look at footprint data and don't know what they're seeing.
4. Confirmation Lag
Traditional orderflow analysis requires waiting for bars to complete before drawing conclusions. By the time you've confirmed an absorption pattern, the opportunity might be gone. This is where AI changes everything.
⚠️
The Retail Trader's Disadvantage
Retail traders trade on completed price action + popular technical indicators. Institutional traders trade on real-time order flow — they see the buying/selling pressure forming before retail traders see it on a candlestick. This is the information asymmetry that causes retail trading to have such a high failure rate.
How AI Changes the Game for Retail Traders
The AI Orderflow Indicator solves the three biggest problems with traditional orderflow analysis:
Real-Time Annotation, Not Lag
Instead of waiting for a bar to close to confirm a pattern, AI can analyze order flow in real time and flag institutional buying/selling zones as they form. You see the pattern before it's complete — giving you first-mover advantage.
Pattern Recognition at Scale
AI models trained on thousands of hours of ES order flow data can recognize patterns that would take a human trader years to learn. Things like subtle absorption mechanics, divergence patterns, and pressure distribution shifts that a human might miss on the 50th bar of the day.
Remove Emotion from Interpretation
Human traders get tired, miss details, and let bias cloud their interpretation. AI applies consistent, rule-based analysis to every single bar. No fatigue. No bias. Just data.

Getting Started with Orderflow
If you're serious about understanding order flow, here's the path forward:
- Set up Sierra Chart with footprint bars. If you're not already trading with footprint data, you're flying blind. Switch to footprint charts for your ES 5-min or 1-hour timeframe.
- Learn the basics: absorption, imbalances, delta, and VWAP interaction. Our other blog articles walk you through each concept.
- Deploy the AI Orderflow Indicator. Let it annotate your footprint charts so you start seeing institutional patterns in real time.
- Practice recognizing patterns. Spend a week just observing — don't trade. Notice how absorption zones often precede big moves. See how divergence predicts failure.
- Trade small at first. Once you see the patterns, size up gradually. Orderflow is reliable, but like any edge, it requires discipline to execute.
