The story
Stocks rose on Thursday as a bond rally offset another hot inflation reading. Producer prices jumped 1.3% in September and 6.3% from a year ago, well above forecasts. Even so, the 10 year Treasury yield fell to about 5.09%, after topping 5.32% the day before. The Dow gained 1.08% to 52,177, the Russell 2000 rose 1.38%, the S&P 500 added 0.33% and the Nasdaq edged up 0.08% to 26,713 as tech stayed soft. US crude futures climbed 3.03% to $97.97.
The MAG7 and the megacaps
Tech lagged for a second day, and the Nasdaq barely finished higher after falling more than 1% at the open. Investors moved money out of tech and into other parts of the market, which helped the Dow and small caps.
After the bell
Hot producer prices
Wholesale prices rose 1.3% in September versus 0.5% expected, and 6.3% from a year ago. Economists said the data shows the Fed's work is not done.
Bond rally
The 10 year yield fell about 13 basis points to roughly 5.09%, easing pressure on stocks and borrowing costs.
Rotation into other stocks
The Dow and Russell 2000 outperformed as investors moved away from tech. Nike rose more than 5%.
Deals and misses
Penske Automotive agreed to be taken private at $212 a share. Rocket Lab fell after delaying its Neutron rocket to next year.
Crypto
Bitcoin fell 0.78% to about $81,501, trading between roughly $80,719 and $82,821. Crypto does not always move with stocks, so it is worth tracking on its own.
Into the night
London's FTSE 100 closed at its highest since early September after UK growth beat expectations. UniCredit won European Central Bank approval to take control of Commerzbank. Anthropic reported third quarter revenue of $16.8 billion and is preparing for a possible IPO.
