The story
US stocks finished higher on Monday, with the Nasdaq 100 closing at a record. The Nasdaq 100 rose 0.89% to 31,339.5, while the S&P 500 gained 0.68% to 7,830.0. Tech shares led the move, and traders appeared willing to look past higher Treasury yields and a firmer dollar. Bitcoin was the soft spot, slipping 0.79%.
The MAG7 and the megacaps
Large tech names were the main drivers of the Nasdaq's record close, as headlines pointed to broad strength in tech shares. We do not have individual price moves for each of the Magnificent 7 in today's data, so the Nasdaq 100's 0.89% gain is the best snapshot of how big tech traded as a group.
After the bell
Tech shares lead the rally
Gains in technology stocks lifted the Nasdaq to a fresh record close, and the Nasdaq 100 outpaced the S&P 500 by roughly 0.2 percentage points.
Higher yields did not stop buyers
Treasury yields rose during the day, which can pressure growth stocks. Traders largely looked past it, and stocks still finished near their highs.
A firmer dollar
The US dollar strengthened across currency markets. A stronger dollar can weigh on multinational earnings, but it did not derail Monday's advance.
Bitcoin lags stocks
Bitcoin fell 0.79% while equities rallied, showing risk appetite was concentrated in stocks rather than crypto on the day.
Crypto
Bitcoin edged lower on Monday, closing at $85,799.56, down 0.79%. It traded between a high of $86,929.66 and a low of $85,098.80. Crypto sat out the stock rally, a reminder that the two markets do not always move together.
Into the night
The dollar firmed and Treasury yields moved higher heading into and through the US session, according to market wraps. Even so, stocks kept climbing. Nasdaq 100 futures traded between 30,957.5 and 31,371.0, and S&P 500 futures between 7,760.25 and 7,847.5, so both indexes finished near the top of their daily ranges.
